I have a 86 bayliner capri with a force 125, this is my first outboard, and I notice the engine seems noisey almost like a diesel I have run it up and down the lake a few times almost at full throttle and it seems to run fine, I checked the compression which is around 130 for all cylinders but I'm still worried about the engine noise, I've tried to catch some other outboards at the launch, but I never seem to catch one. Are outboards suposed to be as quiet as an inboard? because I had a rinker with a mercruiser in it and is was really quiet. Any info will help.

The exaust is mostly discharged under water, but they can still be a bit noisey. You said it "sounds like a diesel". In what way? It knocks? rattles?
Does it make the same racket with the cover off?
Sometimes loose insulation can make contact with the flywheel and make it whine. A noise could be anytihng from that to a worn wrist pin.

It seems more of a rattle than a knock, it's quieter when the cover is on but you can still hear it, The insulation has been removed from the inside cover.

Re: 1986 Force 125

I took the boat out yesterday and it ran good, I still hear some noise at an idle but when your driving it sounds fine, how loud is an outboard at and idle? I've been trying to catch someone with an outboard at the launch but the only one I seen yesterday the guy couldn't get it started and he was pissed so I offered him some help and he said he was taking it back home. Anyone have any sounds clips of thier motor running? thanks
