Is there not a tale tell on the 1986 force? I see the two holes in back that appear to be the exaust. How can I make sure the engine is being properly cooled and the impeller is still good?

Not factory. One can be installed at the thermostat. Should be a removable plug in the housing where a tube can be attached.

I just saw the post on here about adding one - but in the meantime - how can I tell if the water impeller is performing as it should ? Does water come out with the exhaust? there has to be something right? Just a small sign that water is cooling the engine?

Yes on my 125HP of that vintage the cooling water came out the two exhaust holes once the thermostat opened up.

The 2 holes "might" have water?? Might not??
Most of the water exits through the snout on the bottom.
Your 86n had a pressure relief spring and plug.
If the pump puts out too much water the PR activates and water can flow from the 2 holes.
Most PR valves I've seen are stuck and don't function.
That's why they removed them sometime in 88.

What you need to do is test the alarm system.
The orange lead in the wiring harness at the buss bar on the side of the motor where the solenoid is.
Key on, ground the orange lead and the buzzer should sound off.
NO?? then any auto or motorcycle horn will work.Just make sure it's wired correct.

Install a whizzer. Top of the head is a silver screw.
It might come loose might not.
Install an elbow and a hose there.
Most whizzers are necked down to about 1/16in hose.
Too big and it can take cooling water away from the motor.

The impeller?? it can last 2 weeks or 10 years.
Depending on the amount and type of use.
Running in sand will kill it quick.

I changed mine every 3-4 years.
Some do it yearly.
They suggest every one to two years.

There is a slotted screw on the side of the lower housing.
Looks like a drain plug, it's NOT!!
DO NOT EVER TOUCH THAT SCREW!!

Never adjust the timing or mess with the screws on the top of the carbs.

These are a simple base outboard but can be ruined by tinkering with the little things.
Get a manual.

Thanks for all the info! On the top of my engine there is a screw of some sort where everyone is installing the taletell at. Mine sticks up about an inch, and has a ground wire that is yellow on it ? Not sure what it is for - or if I could put it somewhere else. I will add a picture shortly to make sure I am looking at the right thing. If so, I will make the modification tomorrow. I ran the engine for about 3 minutes today and saw no signs of water exiting the engine - and I am 100% sure the water flow was good to it. Made me worried so I turned it off. I am not sure if the water impeller is still good or not, so to me it is just safer to change it out I think. I don't want to risk it.

No Title

Can someone verify I am looking at the right thing - And I also need to know what the wire is connected to the top of it and if its ok to move it. Is this where I would add the NPT connector and hose from? Also for the NPT is it better to find brass or stainless steel? Thank you in advance.

That IS the spot for the whizzer.
That thing on top is either a water pressure gauge or temp gauge sender.
If you don't have a gauge in the dash? just hook it there.
