hello everybody first time on here. I have a problem maybe a bad problem. I had real low compresion on the middle cylinder, decided it was the head gasket and it was but also found a small peice of the block missing on outside of piston sleeve. I cant tell if the gasket will be okay with this chip missing or if the motor is junk. It loks like the gasket will sit on the sleeve. and also where is the best place to get a gasket for this old motor? I am sure they are available somewhere. and should I have the head resurfaced just in case it is warped? I would apreciate any help I can get thanks Mike

The missing chunk of metal is critical for the gasket to do its job. Personally, I would have a machinist take a look at it and see if they can rebuild it. As for the gasket it is actually available here at iBoats or at boats dot net.

I had the same problem and didn't know it until the motor lost spark.
I couldn't get the flywheel off and decided to dismantle and found the split.
If it's the only problem?? You might be able to fill with liquid metal.Smooth it down.
Or take it to a welding shop and see if they can add a piece.
It doesn't have to be perfect just to fill in the hole.
Oh yea I ended up scrapping mine :(

well thats kinda what i was going to try, just add some jb weld or something like that and the file it down smooth. I guess it just needs something for the gasket to sit on. the motoer still ran just that cylinder bad. but I dont want to have to scrap it like you did, wht happened that you had to scrap yours?

The location of the chipped metal is subject to high pressure and high temperature. Although, JB weld might work initially I do not believe it is a permanent solution. If you can do welding all you need basically is a spot weld build up and then file it smooth on the top. That will be more of a permanent fix. I wouldn't worry about the wall side at all if it is rough unless you have something to file it smooth also. But the top of course needs to be even just like the rest of the other cylinder walls.
