1986 Four Winns Santara 210

Greeting iboaters! This is my first post here, so, I figured, I'd start a thread on my upcoming resto of the boat I picked up over the weekend.

I just bought a 1986 Four Winns Santara 210, with the 350 Mercruiser with Alpha One drive. The boat has sat for two years, and we're in the process of cleaning it up now - it was filthy. I know I'm gonna have to replace the floors, and inspect the transom, stringers and such.


I'll have to at least do some engine work as it does not start. I had hoped it might have been something like a fuel pump as the PO said it just didn't start one day - and he being the type of person were money was not an object, just bought another boat. However, I did notice there seems to be water in the oil. I can't tell how much until I drain and flush the crankcase; clean the gas tank, fuel lines and carb, and then try to fire it up. If the water is just from condensation since it sat out in the open, I'd consider myself lucky, however, my luck usually doesn't run that way. My plan to check out the engine is as follows:

Pull the plugs and pour a couple ounces of transmission fluid into the holes, and let sit for a few hours. Then use a breaker bar to see if the engine spins. If it does, I'll clean the gas tank, fuel lines, carb and put a new fuel filter on it; get a battery and try to start it. If it runs, I'll let it run for a bit and see if there's any more water getting into the oil. If there is, I'll consider the engine to be scrap and I'll plan on
getting a late '90's 350 Vortec and get it ready for marine use with new gaskets and block plugs, etc... I'll probably go the route of building it up a little (anyone know how much horsepower and torque these boats can handle?).

If the the engine and transom checks out and all I have to do is replace some floors, stringers, etc... with new wood, resin and carpet, I could probably have this boat running by the end of the year. If not, it'll be spring 2016 - hopefully.

Also, does anyone have the specs for these boats? I know it weight around 2600# dry, but, how any people can it hold and what are the weight limits?

We still have to take out the carpets and get to the decking, but, it's got several soft spots in it so I know there's work to be done!

Welcome to iBoats! The HIN plate should be on the transom or up around the dash some where. It should have all the Passenger and other data. Should look something like this..

Based on her configuration I'd guess she's about a 8-10 passenger boat and probably rated for around 1,200 to 1,500 lbs but that's just a guess based on

Thanks for the info and welcome Woodonglass. Still trying to find the HIN plate, I'll come across it at some point.

I was in the boat last night sweeping up leaves and pine needles - lot of work to do before I start stripping the carpet out. My feelings are mixed right now on the amount of work I'm looking at. I'm positive ALL of the flooring will have to replaced. I'm not sure of the transom just yet. I was able to take a couple pics, but, I'm not sure I'll know about the transom until I pull the engine. The floor is a joke. Whoever worked on it previously decided to use wafer-board, un-treated, and cover it with carpet. The stuff is coming out looking like wood putty...

Check the Title or if you want to verify the HIN, the HIN number should be stamped on the transom area. Stand behind boat facing outdrive. On Starboard or Right top side of transom it should be stamped on a tag that was riveted on, or screwed on. Some were stamped into aluminum. Some were stamped into fiberglass. All have been on the upper starboard corner of the transom. Also it could be stamped into the BIA plate next to the USCG capacity plate.

Many boats also have a secondary hin somewhere inside the boat, in the bilge, under the gunnel, under the helm, etc.

I did find the HIN where you said it would be - found that Saturday. I was looking for the plate that Woodonglass was talking about that had other info on it about the boat. That one is still eluding me... I'm sure I'll come across it during deconstruction...

What your looking for is the USCG capacity plate. Mine was so faded I could not read it.


It should also have what HP the boats rated for.

I've seen two areas where sticker similar to that used too be...

Someone on Speedwake sent me the 1986 Four Winns catalog, so a I have a bit of that info now.

I'm looking forward to digging into this beast if the rain will stop...

Well, I got to start pulling back some carpet this weekend - in between rain showers. Hopefully I can get some pics this week. I started by lifting up on the seat, to get the items stored inside the seat out. The stainless screws holding the seat to the deck came right out of the 'deck' with only one remaining in the deck - this didn't do a lot to build confidence... Then I started at the stern pulling carpet. the transom wood and the wood towards the back of the boat all looks good, but, I'm viewing it right now as a wolf in sheep's clothing. Until I do a core sample, I'm still telling myself I have a transom job looking at me. Once I got past the back 2 to 3 feet of decent looking wood/fiberglass, the cheapo deck replacement reared it's ugly head. The 'deck' consists of 3/8" plywood under the carpet, that is badly de-laminated. To make it worse, it looks like to was put on over top of the original deck, or another poor deck job that was done previously, which appears to be particle board/OSB since it now looks very much like wet sawdust. Providing mother nature plays nice this week, I should have some time after work to peel back more carpet. And right not, in some places, I think the carpet is the only material that comprises the deck....

I know it's not much in the way of encouragement but once you get past all the cruddy demolition work, it DOES get more rewarding when you get to start building her back!!! Hang in there!!!:D;)
