I have a 175 HP the same year and was thinking of picking up a 185HP with bad compression for spare parts. They are asking $450 for it but I was wondering what the difference is between the two motors if anyone knows. The lower unit is probably worth that if it’s working. It looks identical to my motor. I tried to look up this motor for parts to cross referencing but it isn’t listed.

Are you 100% sure the 185 is the same year ?-----Do you have the model numbers.-------I believe you are looking at the 1985 model 185 HP.-------And you may be have a GT 175 which is the same block / bore ( 3.625" ) as the older 235 HP rated at the prop.-----And the 185 might well be the same as the previous year 200 HP with 3.500" bore rated 185 HP at the prop.----Fairly easy if I was looking at the bits and pieces on my work bench !!

I don’t know the model number of the 185 but will ask to verify the year. My 175 model number is J175txcd. You are correct the bore size of my 175 is 3.625. I just did a complete rebuild just before winter. I figure with a motor this old a parts motor may not be a bad idea.

It can be difficult and frustrating to explain.----The 185 was marketed in 84 and 85.----But really it was the same motor as the 3.500" bore 200 HP ( crank rated ) in 1983 and earlier.------But it was rated 185 at the prop !!!!
