Can someone help diagnose/solve a trim problem? The tilt works as it always has, but the trim stays in the low position. I can hear the motor making its effort, but there is no movement.

Re: 1986 Johnson 70hp Trim problem

I do see a leak of some clear amber-colored something (oil?, hydraulic fluid?) around the base of the rod for the trim. I haven't had this out on the water in about 6-7 months, but it is most definitely 100% saltwater.
Thanks...

you could have a rusted shaft, froze up.

Before that check the fluid level. It sounds like you have a leaky trim cylinder end cap.

Bring the motor fully up and out, top up, cycle 5 to 6 times, re check, continue as needed. The system is self bleeding and cycling it will bleed the air from the system.

Very possible the shaft is frozen up as stated, but cant hurt to check the fluid first before paying the mechanic.

Im sorry, I dont know what cycle means. Where would I add fluid and what type of fluid do I add? I am an idiot to this stuff.

Cycle means run up and down. The Johnson/Evinrude dealer has power tilt/trim fluid.

Re: 1986 Johnson 70hp Trim problem

I drained the fluid from the reservoir, refilled, than cycled the tilt up and down a few times, pumped the trim switch a few times, and it started moving. Thanks for the help and saving me some money.
Now I have to troubleshoot this starting problem. I turn the key, it clicks, but nothing moves. I just bought an analog meter to test the voltage. Some directions I received from this website gave me instructions to figure out if its the solenoid or the starter.
Thanks...
