1986 Johnson 9.9, upper drive shaft seals.

Hi
I've just got a nice 1986 Johnson 9.9. The previous owner took it to have a new impeller fitted, but the driveshaft was frozen in the crank shaft. It looks like the repair man forced the drive shaft out of the lower unit, and then gave a ridiculously high quote to free the drive shaft from the crank shaft. So thats how I bought the engine cheap :D

Anyway, I got the drive shaft out really easily, and everything else looks good. The only thing I can see that indicates force being used is where the impeller drive pin was forced up out of the water pump housing. Forward and reverse engage and work O.K.

Do I need to replace the upper drive shaft seals, (the ones that fit back to back in the manual), or will it be alright to leave the old ones in? The seal looks O.K, but I don't know whether they will leak or not. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Thanks in advance.
Steve

You've got it torn down this far why let a few bucks stand in your way. Replace them.

Thanks
Fireman57, you're dead right. What on earth was I thinking about!
I take it I can use whatever method to take them out, (any advice on the easiest method?), but what's the best method of putting the new ones in without special tools, etc?

P.S. From your username, can I take it that you are a fellow Firefighter?

Thanks again
Steve

Only a volunteer not a paid professional. We farm in Southern Indiana and depend on the volunteer firefighters. As for removal and replacement. Anyway you can get them out will work. As for going back in I think I pulled the powerhead on my 1976 model as it was easier to get to. You can bet that the next replies will be to get a manual and then someone will tell you exactly how to do it. I haven't used my 9.9 for about 9 years now as I went to a 1957 35hp and then to a '91 25hp.

Thanks
The seals I'm talking about are in the lower unit, they call them the upper driveshaft seals because they fit where the driveshaft comes out the top of the lower unit. I've got the manuals, but they mention using a special tool to replace the bearings. I just wondered if you could do it without the tool.

Steve

I don't know of any special tool. I thought you meant at the upper end of drive to the powerhead.
Like I said it's been a few years since I've been in the 9.9 but I believe you can seat them with a dull punch and a series of very light taps. Someone here will correct me and have a very elegant solution. I don't know it all but don't tell my wife. I hope someone let's you know for sure.
