My 6hp is hard to start. Is it just because its old and hasn't had any MX done to it in atleast 10 years. I rebuilt the carb myself, but it still is hard to get going. Any ideas. I've heard it should start with two to three pulls. It takes about 6 to 10 to get it going cold. Then it takes about two or three to get going once its hot.

Also how much would a boat shop charge in South Florida to replace to lower unit Oil, and Impeller and Water Pump. The water coming out of the pee hole is warm at idle, and not very warm at the top end. Does this mean the Water Pump is doing its job.

I run the motor on a 12 foot aliminum in Brack water.

sounds a like a carb O/H is in order....
as for changing gearcase fluid and replacing w.p., it'll be somewhere in the 75-100 dollar mark, maybe a little less in some areas.

I rebuilt the carb myself. I don't think its a carb issue.

I don't know your engine very well, but if I was pretty sure it wasn't a carb problem, I would check out the ignition timing and carb syncronization. How's the compression?

your hard starting is not normal even for the age of your motor.Do the basics.... spark, compression, fuel sample. To hazard a guess,if spark doesn't jump 3/8 of an inch, there lies the problem.
As to the gearcase work,$75 to $100 is about righr for a normal service,if done about every 2nd or 3rd year. But if that gearcase hasn't been off in 10 years, anybodies guess as to time involved.
Good luck

DHP

Heres a little thing you can try dude....put some premix fuel in a squirt bottle and before starting, shoot some down the carb throat. If it starts right up, might wanna give the carb another look. If the problem still persists, take the ignition advice already posted.

Re: 1986 Johnson hard to start?

I replaced the spark plugs today, and it cranked with one pull after i got it going. At first it was hard to get going, but I think it had to do with replacing the buld and fuel line. Once it got going it kinda sputtered, which again I think was because of the new fuel line. It was a great feeling of accomplishment to get the thing to start with one pull. Especially because all the neighbors watched me with the hatch off(acting all badass) and then test run it and then turn it off and crank it up about ten times. WOO HOO. I just hope it does it again tommorrow, first crank;). Now I just need it serviced. Oil and water pump. Anyone suggest a fairly crafty newbie doing this himself to save some money? If so anyone have a link to help me along?

Thanks a million for all the help. This forum is great, especially when compared to the pilot forum and gun forum I am on. Lots of helpful and nice people.

Happy Holidays,
Ryan
