Just noticed that my 1986 Merc 9.9 is showing signs of oil- white frothy residue dripping down lower leg appears to be from exhaust port.
What could it be? blown gasket on water jacket?
I had just repalced lower leg oil day before I noticed this, but there appears to be older residual residue build up on leg so don't know if this a brand neww issue or not. No real other signs of trouble - except that last time I ran carb dry before removing I MAY have heard a bit of a knock, but I wasn't really paying attention.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

While you may have a problem consider this - All 2 cycles will pass unburned oil through the exhaust system. When oil and water get together you get a white residue. So you may not have a problem at all. How does it run? Does it get hot?

It didn't seem hot when I lugged it from boat to car, and it was running fine - guess I'll have to go out again a try it on a short trip and really keep eyes and eaqrs open for things out of the ordinary.
Thanks

Was out again yesterday.
Even more oily frothy stuff coming from both outlet holes in upper section of lower leg.
I thought it may have been a bit warm at one point while trolling, upped the speed a bit and it cooled off. Water coming out slightly warm.
Runs fine at troll and full speed.

I just reaized that I may have mixed the last batch of fuel a bit rich probably about 35 or 40:1 instead of 50:1. Perhaps this acounts for the extra oil?
