Re: 1986 merc xr2 150 will not run

The linkage and timing is a bunch of adjustments that are all interdependent. You sort of problem is usually caused by tinkering with it without thoroughly understanding how it works. The procedure starts from scratch, starting with mechanically checking the position of the timing pointer. It assumes the engine was just bolted together from spare parts and nothing is right. Probably pretty close to the condition of your engine.

For instance, idle timing is set at a base setting. When you start the engine it is usually slightly fast. The idle adjustment adjusts a different screw that moves the whole rack, but one of the things it affects is base idle timing.

When we fine tune them, as in change carbs, change jetting per cylinder, etc, we may mess with the timing, but we know what we are doing. Always you need to at least start with the book settings. In your case it'll probably be right where you want it.

Mercury factory service manual for your engine. Either look up the number in the parts list for your motor (by s/n) and try to buy used on eBay or Amazon, or just buy it outright where you buy mercury parts.

You probably aren't the first one to tinker with it.

Like I said, the adjustments are sequential and interdependent.

Do you own the manual yet?

All the water for the tell-tale goes through a t-stat first. If it wasn't 140ish, there'd be concern. You also might notice it takes from a few seconds to a minute for the tattle-tale to start up. That also is perfectly normal.
