I have a 1986 Mercury 35 hp power everything.
serial number: a153502

My shift control linkage( P/N:75104a-8 ) is broken and the new one will be here today. I have bought the manual but cannot find anything at all about the shift control linkage. I'm trying to figure out how to remove it and install new one. Do you have to remove the power head to get the shaft out? or is there a key or pin to remove? I have looked everywhere online with no luck.
anyone have any insight?

thank you

there should be a roll pin in the linkage to the shaft. see attached photo, the pin is a bit blurry. I've never changed one but from what I've read you'll have to remove the power head unless you can figure out a different way to get that pin out. some have a cotter pin that's easier to remove instead of a roll pin but I think you would be able to see that.

thank you. I'll see if i can get the pin out and push the new one in. I'm really worried about having to remove the whole powerhead. seems really difficult and in depth for someone new to boat motors, I'm very mechanically inclined and i work on complex stuff daily but I'm not sure about tackling that by myself. hopefully the pin will pop right out and right in!

I'm curious how your shift linkage broke in the first place? i have a 40hp with same one, just wondering what to watch out for?

i have a feeling that pin will be a pain, not enough room to work in there. not sure if you could drill a hole somewhere in the lower cowling to line up a long roll pin punch. or maybe take one of those spring loaded center punches and grind the end flat, pry won't have enough power to move it.

Me being a jackass broke it... first time messing with a boat motor. Didn't pay attention when installing lower unit and didnt have the shift shaft lined up into the shift linkage tightened it up and jammed that rod up through the top shifter piece where the pin is located and destroyed the shifter bracket thing that has the pin. 100% screw up on my part.

gettting it out should be easy its getting the new one in thats going to suck. that pin/shaft is shoved up about an inch through the top of the shift linkage.

I'm glad I asked because I'll be messing with the lower unit soon. never thought about what would happen if the shaft got jammed. sounds like something I would do. good luck with your repairs and if you find a good way to do it let us know. I'm sure someone will do the same thing eventually.
