I recently took my motor off of one boat and put it on another one. My old motor/boat was a 1987 VIP with a 125 hp force on it. The new old boat was a 1988 VIP with a 1988 125 hp Force motor. When I hung the motor on the new (old)boat, I connected the wiring harness according to the color scheme instructions on the side of the block. Now when I try to start it, I get no spark in any cylinder. Before I moved the motor from the old boat to the new boat, it ran fine. My question(s) is.

1. Does anyone know of any difference in the wiring harnesses that I am missing that would create this problem?
2. I am not sure if it is a motor problem or a boat problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1987 125 hp Force problem

Couldn't tell you if there are any differences in the wiring harness, but I'll bet that's where the problem lies. Sounds like the ignition "Kill" circuit is gounded preventing the CD modules from firing the coils. Disconnect the white wires from the CD modules at the terminal block. Don't let them touch ground. Try starting it. If it fires and the motor starts, choke the motor to stop it. Only time the Kill circuit should be grounded is when the ignition key is in the OFF position. With all the wires hooked up correctly, when the Key is in the RUN or START position, the Kill circuit should read open, no continuity with ground.

And if the new boat has a kill switch, either on the control box or on the dash, check to see if the clip is inserted under the button.

the big item will be your cdi
did both engines have the same cdi modules of the same color?

next look up the part number for trigger mechanism on both engines. Is it same part number?

if so then problem is probably something minor like a loose connection or a blown fuse.
