1987 20 hp evinrude running lean

My evinrude starts and runs only choke fully on. <br />It runs very rough and as soon as I push the<br />choke off or open the throttle it dies immediately.<br />Occasionally it spouts smoke from somewhere under<br />the flywheel. Fuelline, carb and pump should be<br />OK. Bad crankshaft seals? I'm not a mechanic<br />but I've tools and CLYMER's shop manual available.

Welcome to iboats. First thing that comes to mind having to use the choke to keep running is that you need to rebuild your carb. Clean it well and put a new kit in it. Second thing is are you sure that the smoke is coming from under the flywheel or just from under the hood? If it is from under the hood your whole problem just might be a bad exhaust gasket. If it is coming from under the flywheel then you have other issues to tackle. You have a Clymer manual so pulling the flywheel, if you are sure that is where the smoke is coming from, shouldn't be that difficult. Have good look and post back.
