Hi !
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to my problem regarding :

When starting the engine it idles fine, but upon placing it in gear FWD or REW it tends to stop
when placed back to Idle/neutral or if remained in
slow speed for long without placing it in the high speed region for a second or two.. It's almost as it does not like being in the slow speed region..
So where to start looking ?

Regards
Nils G.

Have you tried to decarbon the motor? Or any type of Carb Cleaning/Rebuild ?

No, as I am unfamiliar with outboard engines I have not done anything with it yet, I figured it best to ask someone first :) Decarbon you said, how does that
get done ?

I'm a little confused by your post. Is it idle in gear and low speed your having problems with? Or is it high speed or going to high speed. Will it idle in neutral, but not in gear? Can you get it to accelerate to high speed? Could you clarify a little more? Some history on the motor would help? Is it new to you and was it ever running right? Has it sat for a long time without running on a regular basis?

Sorry about the fuzzy post.... I am not native English speaking, so trying to explain to you lot in a second language is a tad difficult at times..

The motor is new to me and the problem area is when going from idle(neutral) to slow speed fwd or back. When the gear kicks in it tends to kill the engine, altso when i throttle back from fullspeed to slow it runs only for a short while in slow before it dies ,,,,, It has been stored about 6 or 7 months (winter time here in Norway) And according to prev. owner it was running great last summer... (yeah I dont buy that) but here it is...

So far I have adjusted the Idle screw, to get it running long enough in slow speed to get past the area and into high speed, but this tends to give a nasty high idling speed...

I'd start with rebuilding all three carbs, then doing a sync & link which is adjusting to make the carbs agree with the timing advance.

Also be aware there is a Factory Service Bulletin - #SB-2188 that deals with certain 65/70 hp models. They require a slightly different setup (than what the manual states) to prevent 'loading up' when idling (like waiting for a skier to get ready,or trolling)

DHP

Thx, now how do I see if that factory bulletin applies to my motor ? (where to find it)

Never mind ! I visited my dealer today and now I
have the bulletin in question before me, and it does not apply to my motor !

So what do you think, a rebuild of the carburettors to start with ?

Regards
Nils G.

Re: 1987 70Hp Johnson VRO slow speed

Seems to have 90% of the problem fixed, Today after looking at the carburettor links and the butterfly chokes inside it appeared that two of them was slightly open, it was hard to tell, but I decided to try a link & sync adjust as mentioned ealier and the result was staggering :) LOL it now runs proper in Idle and it shifts into gear and continues to run for prolonged times, wich it did not do before...
Due to bad weather i could not try a fullspeed run today, but i will do it as soon as weather permits and let you know what happens... Anyway Thank you wery much for the suggestions..

Regards
Nils G.

Seems the problem is solved, I have just been out doing extensive testruns on the engine and it runs o soo smooth now... The Link & Sync really fixed the problems.. Thank you all for taking the time to answer my post here..
