Exact same problem

Exact same problem

87Baylinercapri,

I have the EXACT same problem as you have described. I thought it might be the plugwires and I have changed them and that didn't do it so I am now stumped again. Have you made any progress on your problem?

Re: 1987 85 hp wont go WOT and misses

I have in fact, i beleive i found the culprit, but havn't had time to fix it. I found a wire loose that came disconnected when i was playing with them. It was one of the wires that went from the CDI module (one of the two black boxes to the right of the coils)...this wire comes from up top by the flywheel and connects to a panel of wires, that then go up to the cdi module. The wire had a small #1 label on it and had broken off of the ring terminal. I have yet to reconnect it with a new ring terminal but am thinking that is the issue. I'll let you know but i'd check on that panel of connections just below the cd modules.

I have checked over the wires and so far have only found one loose wire going to the third screw up on the right on the wire connection panel. I think it is labeled as magneto. I am planning to pull the power packs and look a little harder today.

Make sure there is a good ground wire from the plate the power packs are on to the engine block. I had a problem like that and there was a bad ground wire. Good luck

Re: 1987 85 hp wont go WOT and misses

Using a GPS and the on board speedometer I clock my boat at 17mph. Then after cleaning up and tightening some of the wiring I went out and clocked it topped out at 25mph. The boat seems to run fine. It has been to the shop. They replaced all the coils and the power packs. I don't like the wiring they did. There were loose wires. They used male / female connectors from napa to wire in the power packs and the new plug wires are Hyperlon wire core, but have Napa boots and plug connectors inside the boot. I have dielectric grease around the boots at the coil nipples because they want to arc otherwise. I have a strong spark at #3, ok at #2, and little at #1. All three cylinders are firing, just the motors runs according to which plug you pull off.

I think I have a loss of electrical firing power somewhere and I am going to clean up the napa connectors and replace the stock plug wires.
