Bought a 1987 15ft South Seas center console with 85hp force outboard. Put it in bay last weekend for first time ever and it ran great up until sat afternoon while cruising at about 30mph and it cut off like you turned the key. Started right back up but bogged out when giving it gas. Primer bulb felt soft so we primed it and nursed the boat back to the marina. After taking the cover off the motor we saw gas was leaking from the carburetor. Was this from priming the bulb too much? Would a clogged carb just shut the boat off so abrupt?

Sounds like the needle valve has gone bad or there is some crud in the carburetor that is lodged between the needle valve and seat, holding it open and causing the gas to overflow the carburetor bowl.

Took the carbs off and sent them out to be redone. Ordered a fuel pump as well. We checked the gas and it was clean and put a new primer bulb on before taking the carbs off.

Usually the fuel pump needs a $5 diaphram.
Just replace it.
Install a filter,Wally World G2 or G12 between the carb and the fuel pump.
Priming the bulb too much.If it gets hard it's done it's job.
The float in the carb should shut off the gas.
Profile, location?? You might be close to someone who can help.

I was checking all the grounds and found a loose wire that looks like its coming from a temp sensor in the head? Fixed it and am going to put the new fuel pump in and the carburetors this weekend.

Also putting new fuel line in and fuel filter too. Will post after the weekend and let know how it worked out.

Intalled the new fuel pump diaphram with check valves and put the carbs back on after having them cleaned and looked at. The boat started right up and ran great. Took it on the longest run so far and it worked out well.
