My father in law gave us his old 1987 Bayliner, The boat runs good but when it's in the water it won't get up to speed. If I go full throttle the engine will die. I'm no mechanic, but if I pull back on the throttle just before it dies it'll stay running.

I was told it could be a # of things, Wrong Prop, dirty fuel line ( replaced with new lines), wrong jets...... was even told that the power trim and tilt needed to come back off and place the motor back on the boat. To be honest I don't know what to do???

Any help would be great.

Start with the fuel pump. Inspect the diaphram for holes or tears.

To me it sounds like the system is starving of fuel or it could be a timing problem. So start with the simple ones first. When it is running check the primer bulb make sure it is not deflated before you throttle up. If it is, it could be old and needs to be replaced. If it doesn't get deflated, try priming it before throttling up and if this solves your problem it means the fuel pump needs to be investigated. Or it could be the carbs need to be cleaned.

Starving for gas.
The tank vent line could be clogged(bugs love the hose).
Check the linkage when you push the throttle all the way forward.
There is a small piece of plastic on the end of the throttle linkage,it breaks with age and will stop it from running right.
Do a compression/spark test just for fun.
Would like to know how removing the trim motor would help???
