Just started working on this motor and had a couple of questions.

is the only idle adjustment the low speed setting with the needle? I noticed there isnt an idle adjustment knob on the side of the motor like the later models.

also, this is the year with the lanyard...this motor didnt come with one. Is there any other replacement make shift part you can use in the meantime until i get the correct part?

and thats your kill switch on this model right? Its basically shorted out without the lanyard gap, and when you plug that ring in and it opens the switch, its like enabling the ignition components to work?

thanks

correct. iboats marine store has replacement lanyards

matt, there should be an idle speed adjustment screw. check the port side of the motor, just near where the linkage does up to the timing plate. not positive about location. does not show on diagram

Hello Matt. So your moving up a few years. Good on you. There is a part called a "restart clip" which should be located on the top of the tiller arm just about where it attaches to the motor. Very ingenious of them to include this part because the lanyard can get lost (or go overboard) and without the lanyard you would be buggered. I'm sure you could fashion something to open the switch for the time being but have a look and see if that part is there. I have no idea about the idle adjustment but I have had others lead me to believe that with the cable throttle it will hold at whatever point you let go of it so maybe the idle speed adjustment isn't required. Best of luck with your new motor. Rick.

do these two wires make a loop? Whoever had the motor before me cut them, so I dont know which goes with which if I put the back together. Also, I was thinking about installing a switch on them instead of the lanyard, but either way I would need to know if the two wires go to seperate things, or if they are in a loop.

thanks

which 2 wires. if kill switch one comes for ignition, other to ground, when contact is made, it shorts the ignition.

If they are cut you should be able to start the engine with out the lanyard in place. That could well be the reason they have been cut. Yes they are a loop but they go to two different things like TD said. If your reconnecting them it wouldn't matter which wires you hook up to (polarity) as the switch only completes a circuit which kills the engine. Rick.

the idle adjustment on this motor is actually on the end of the tiller arm...you twist it and it works with the cabling...kinda neat.

also, just opinionated question:

Should I go ahead and hook the lanyard system up, or just put a kill switch elsewhere, or even like the factory circle one the years before?

thanks guys

Matt. That lanyard switch could well save your life one day, or the life of a loved one. You have my opinion. Rick.
