Re: 1987 Johnson J200TXCUC lost power

Here is some good info on cleaning the throttle bodies. Something that might be overlooked when rebuilding the carbs.

http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/evinrude-225-1996-idling-problems-590407.html

There is a thread in "Top Secret Files" on rebuilding carbs. It's somewhat generic, but still good info.

If you get that finished, you can pull the flywheel and check the magnets. If they are loose, remove them and re-epoxy them to the flywheel. You can find threads related to this problem. Hardman epoxy for wet environments (purple label) is the OEM epoxy of choice, but not necessarily the best. JB Weld also make a marine epoxy that many people use. If the magnets are loose, you can get them off in one piece if you are careful. All rust must be removed before putting them back on.

Find a machine shop that works on two stroke outboards.

Thanks for the info and link. If I remove all of the throttle bodies, I would assume that a "link and sink" will need to be performed after reinstall. Correct?

You can remove the intake without messing with the linkage but you should link and Sync after rebuild to make sure its all right. pretty simple process if you have your manual

Yes. You will have to sync all the throttle butterflies. Be sure they are all closed at idle paying special attention to #5 and#6.

Wow, I must have been asleep while typing "link and SYNC" not "sink".... I do have my manual and will reference during installation, does look simple but may need to do it a couple times to get it right. As for #5 and #6, is special attention needed because the plates for these carbs are separate from the top #1/#3 and #2/#4 each side? Just curious. Thanks

Yes exactly. It is easy to get #1 and #3 closed but have #5 ever so slightly open due to that pesky connecting link.
Do the butterfly syncing with the black carb bodies OFF. You can very easily see, tap, and adjust without the black bodies in the way.
Whenever you take the throttle plates off, #5 and #6 do not go back on in the exact same place, and they can be slightly open.
You will rarely ever have trouble with the upper butterflies, unless you have a bent butterfly.
Disconnect top link, do one side, then the other, then reattach top link and adjust it for perfect sync operation of both sides.
Make sure the throttle cam roller is moved out of the way.

Very good info...I will inspect the butterflies for being bent too.
As for the Throttle bodies, should I replace the core plugs? Does it help with the cleaning process? Also, I noticed my throttle cam roller is flat (worn) on a side. I will replace with new. Is the OEM cam roller sufficient?

Thanks

To properly clean the TBs, you must remove the core plugs. There are tiny holes back there. Very very tiny, examine carefully, you will see. Explained in detail on other posts.
Gotta get those holes clean. The throttle cam roller is only avail from Evinrude dealers or online from an auth Evinrude seller.

Searched the forum and found the answer to removing the core plug and cleaning. I will remove and clean the tiny holes (passages) and replace plugs with new ones.

Try flipping the roller over. It is about twice as long as the cam it rides on. When you flip it it should contact the cam on the unworn part.
While I'm here, I was installing the heads on my rebuild project. The old head gaskets were stamped this side toward head. The new ones were not marked but both were Victor gaskets. When you get to that point, the printed side of the gasket goes towards the head.

Re: 1987 Johnson J200TXCUC lost power

Update: I am currently rebuilding carbs and cleaning the throttle plates. Hopefully soon I will be able to give some measurements on the cylinders to see what step may come next. I do have an issue with one of the core plugs and the hole it is installed in not fitting snug. Not sure if one of the core plugs was too small possibly but checked it at another hole on throttle plate and it was the proper size for that hole. Question is, can I still install it with some adhesive? Definitely not wanting any air into throttle plate. I have some 3M 847 or can I use something else.

Greg E-I just received my OEM head gaskets and do not see any type of writing on them as you describe. Did you purchase OEM?

The head gaskets were Victor Reinz not OEM.
