I have the same engine and maybe outdrive, and am in the process of replacing the flapper also. I did the impeller last year. I would get a kit for the impeller. A good priced store is amarket.com for many parts. If you give them the info above, they can get the right parts. I assume you have the newer version of exhaust pipes/elbow; that would be with the 1-piece elbow and 2 rubber sections. For an exploded diagram go to stemtostern.com, and you can get part numbers as well.
Make sure you have a manual before tearing into the work. It's not too bad replacing the impeller; locating some of the lower unit screws is a bit tricky. I took some notes when I did mine if you want me to send them. And I found an error in my manual.

Good luck.

Thank you very much. I would like the notes - I do have full manuals for the engine and outdrive. They are very thorough. You can email me at rjmoseman@aol.com...let me know if you send an email - I don't check that one very often.

Am very interested in the error in your manual.

The exhaust on this one is 1 piece metal, two pieces of rubber.

Thanx for the links - I will check them out - I printed out about 80 pages of parts listings and pix/diagrams yesterday....I just want some parts for my boat...but I want the right ones.

Why doesn't anyone have a sight where you plug in your s/n's and they can tell you the right part numbers?

NEVER reuse a gasket or oring of any kind. They are not meant to be re-usable items.
If you want to make sure you get the right parts, go to the Mercury Parts Express site
http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp
Then type in your serial numbers. Look up your parts and order them.
Now, if you want after market parts, just look up the part numbers at parts express and then order the after market part that is supposed to replace that Merc part number.

The other TOOL you will need is the service manual. Get the Mercruiser manuals for your engine and drive. They cost a little more, but they also have the proper information and more of it. Having all the proper parts doesn't help much if you put them together wrong.

I do have the merc service manual - thanx for the link I am going to check it out right now.

How much cheaper are aftermarket parts?

Is the part quality worse?

Is it worth the expense to use OEM?

So -- When you put in a water pump impeller kit, you always install a new lower seal kit?

Shouldn't the impeller kit come with all of the seals that are required?

I figured it out by clicking on the individual parts, looking at the diagram, then seeing which parts and pieces are included in the rebuild kits....

or at least I think that I figured it out

I am going to purchase the water pump rebuild kit part number 46-96148A 8

to see if that fixes the overheating problem and the leaks in the lower unit (milky oil). i am hoping that the mechanic that put in the impeller last time simply didn't replace all of the seals that should have been.

I haven't found the flapper part number yet, but will look next.

That website is great. I had actually found most of the parts I think I need from the aftermarket people....but i am going to buy OEM parts....

The flapper is in the diagrams, PN 60930. You also need the rubber grommet to mount it. I will try to bring in the error info Monday. A buddy and I have had good experiences with amarket, and ebasicpower.com has good prices also. I just ordered the elbow kit, bellows, and flapper parts for $187 including shipping. NAPA often can get you parts also.
