1987 merc 8 hp won't start

I just got this motor for $300 it is in great shape hardley a scratch and the head looks like new,,Pain ect,,I tried to start it after 3 or 4 pulls and she sputtered for a few and I tried again numerous times with the choke out and in and she wanted to go but NOT.I figured it was just floodded but after awhile still no success. The plugs were wet and they looked original since the paint fom the motor head was on the bootom of the plugs..the motor head is like new as far as appearance.So I am at a loss since I have no repair book I got it at a pawn shop.So What can the problem be..Help.

So far I havenarrowed it down to the carb or fuel attachment. I traded a old 25 hp evinrude with a broken (missing) control arm for a 6.6 new fuel tank and hose and attachments. But the attachement to the motor is universal and the ball will not stay hard when pumped up? It does not leak but it is not a tight fit. One possibility. So I will start with a merc fitting and go from there. It does fire at times .So the spark is not the problem. The engine itself has not been starten in a long while ..It has cob webs In and around the engine head. So I will start with that,

OK ..I Took it to a merc Repair and it was missing a small part in the Carb..Starts and Runs now my Problem is that there is a little Oil grey colored coming out of the exhaust on the shaft. What is this..? It is just some grey colored crap not much but it is comming out of the portholes. I have no history 87 merc of this engine so what is that..?

Grey gunk coming out the exhaust is normal, John. It is unburned fuel/oil mixing with water discharge.
