1987 mercury 175 oil injected

I have a 175 merc that is hard to start when cold. I <br />just had the power packs changed , one of the packs was bad , it was really hard to crank before this. A while back someone on here gave me the starting procedure for older mercs with carbs. It will crank when cold but it can be a *itch sometimes. Also, i have had the oil injection taken off and I premix my own. I am wondering if I might have mixed the oil a little to rich. This motor sat up for 3 years until last august when I cranked it. Does anyone think running some sea foam cleaner through it would help.<br />Thanks in advance.<br />Jerry

If the engine set that long, It would be a good Idea to clean and rebuild the carbs. A couple of the nuts on the carbs are a little difficult to get too, but it is pretty straight forward. Get a manual for your engine, They will run about $30.00, but you will save $100s buy having it. Just running a carb cleaner through the engine will essentually do nothing except maybe disloging something that might plug a jet in one or more of your carbs causing a lean condition and frying a cylinder. I would recomend a full synthetic 2 cycle oil as these engines tend to load up at Idle and foul plugs when premixed and smoke more at starup and low RPM conditions, You will solve all these problems with a synthetic, Not to mention the engine will just run better!

I agree with LubeDude, cleaning the carbs would be best. Also I would inspect the recurculating system. The check valves located in the intake tend to stick causing poor idle. If you do check them make sure you put the hoses back on properly and not cross them up. Good luck

I agree also....<br /><br />Except,,,,, Once everything is cleaned and your engine is running properly, you shouldn't have to worry about the load up problem at idle... As I have the same engine, and have never had that happen. I'm also going pre-mix...<br /><br />But a synthetic is best, no doubt about it....<br /><br />When you say it can be a #itch sometimes, are you refering to the motor turning over or firing?<br /><br />Seafoam, won't hurt... However, it may foul the plugs at idle if it dislodges some carbon.
