when i go to put the engine in reverse it works fine when everything is cold, but after a few minutes of running all it does is grind---goes into forward fine all the time but sometimes i have to push the shifter handle down of neutral to get it out of forward---could this be a linkage adjustment somewhere???
thanks--

Re: 1987 yamaha 150

check the lower unit drain magnet for metal and carefully inspect the shift shaft, pre 1995 motors used a plain steel shaft that was prone to rusting away.

Re: 1987 yamaha 150

after using the engine only in forward for the rest of the summer i hauled it out yesterday. I took some cowlings off but could not observe the shift rod--EXCEPT for about a 1/2" space above the lower unit--i saw a 1/8" dia. rusted piece of rod--was that the shift rod???

Isn't that the truth--already snapped a bolt off on the lower unit---put kroil oil on all the bolts and will let it soak for a few days.

kroil wont help. in fact kroil burns when ya hit it with the oxy/acytelene.
you will most likly need the oxy rig and a good set of Dewalt(or equivalent) bullit point drill bits.
