Recently purchased 1989 Invader 196 w/115 HP 6cyl with very low hours. Test ran before purchase, ran great. Brought home, changed plugs, fixed broken ground wire, started in driveway. Took to launch and would not start.....any suggestions where to look first. Boat was ran very little last year or so.

Re: 1988 115HP Non-start issue

Cranking speed is critical to starting, too slow and the electrical system cannot generate to voltage to operate.

Second, did it start again when you got it back home?

A lean carb idle mixture can start and seem fine on the garden hose but once in the water the water column in the lower leg creates back pressure requiring a richer fuel mixture.

Adjust idle mixture to best idle on the hose PLUS almost 1/4 turn fatter (CCW) readjust once on the water to best idle while IN Forward gear PLUS almost 1/8 turn fatter to provide the additional fuel necessary for acceleration.

Rapidly open the throttle to WOT, any lean cough, bog, or hesitation, further richen the idle just the width of the screwdriver blade slot and retest.

Repeat to perfection, then enjoy the satisfactio of a job well done.

Re: 1988 115HP Non-start issue

At home decided to clean any elect connections that looked corroded/salt encrusted. Also checked battery switch and found that #2 Position was not working.......instructions suggest switching back and forth to clean terminals but did not seem to work. So have switched to just one battery and motor fired up.........funny though that sometimes will not turn over right away, only after several on/off cycles of the key. Have checked battery and is brand new/fully charged. Any other suggestions?

With the key OFF, (you don't really need to start the motor).

Grab your pair of trusty battery jumper cables and jump straight from the battery to the starter. If it cranks fine then you still have a poor connection, poor cable, or possibly a poor connection in the relay.

If it still cranks slow then take that new battery in for a LOAD Test, we have seen defective new parts, once the battery is proven good, rebuild the starter.
