I think you are talking about the holes for the tell tale. it should be warm, it is removing the heat from your engine, that is how your engine is cooled.

If you haven't replaced your water pump impeller, it is a good idea. As to the thermostat, you can check it on the stove with a pot of water and a thermometer.

Don't want to hijack thread; but, ...
I am looking at an ad listing for a 1988 Bayliner w/ 125 Force Motor. Says that it is need of a lower unit. How costly is this and how big of a deal to do?
Thanks in advance for any insight, Mike

If I was you, I would look for a good lower on ebay. They usually go for $600-$800 bucks. Installing it is easy there are about 8 long bolts and two or three short ones. It helps to have two people lifting it into position though.

Good luck,

Cool thanks John. Next dumb question. If lower end is removed from engine; can it be started and run to verify that it indeed runs?
Thanks again, mike

Mike,

Without the lower attached, there is no way to feed water up to the head and exhaust chest. Additionally, you will have no back pressure on the exhaust. Both those conditions will lead to a burned up power head.
