Re: 1988 3.0 blown head gasket

the only reason I was looking at the 3.0 was if I get 30 mph Im going to be very happy, I had a 3.0 in a 19ft bayliner cuddy full of wet foam, and I reached 30 without going into max rpms, I think the bayliners listed weight for that boat was 1900lbs, the boat that currently has the 470 is aluminum, Crrestliners listed weight 1850lbs so I would think I would get atleast as good performance as I had in the 1988 bayliner

A 3.0L may work fine in that boat to get you 30MPH. What type of Crestliner?

I have an ol' 72 140HP (3.0L) in my 1800 Crestliner and it does a fine job for fishing, and tubing with the kids. Crestliner lists it's weight at 2105#, but I'm probably over 2400# with all the fishing stuff onboard. My 140HP has been completely rebuilt with the head and manifold ported, so it probably runs better than an old donor boat engine. Top speed in my boat is 34-35MPH at 4600RPM, I cruise at 25MPH turning somewhere around 3500 RPM.

Well, if you are lucky #1 might be a cheap fix but there is no way to know for sure. My first Bayliner 195 was purchased with a bad head gasket (88-89?) and luckily all it took to fix it was a $20 head gasket. Had the boat for 4-5 years without any problems related to the original problem.

30?? My 3.0L 195 tops out at 43MPH and weighs a lot more than 1850lbs

WOW! That's a big girl...

NADA shows 2670# with the 170HP engine, and also shows that boat was available with a 120HP I/O, so a 140 should work. Though were back to the performance issue, will a 3.0L/140HP push that boat to the 30MPH you're looking for?

Converting to 4.3l is going to be cheaper. The 470 drive is a lower ratio than the 3.0l and if you have to use your current drive on the 3.0l I don't think you would be able to get a prop that kept the motor from lugging. The 470 drive ratio is the same as the 4.3l drive so all you need is the engine and externals. You could buy a 4.3 out of a wrecked vehicle and a donor boat with bad drive. No one ever said I wish I had less power.

thumper I agree my first choice has allways been a 4.3 but I have had no luck finding a 4.3 donor none. and spring is closing in on me also from what I understand the 305 is the same gear ratio, the 3.0's are just every where. Im afraid the 305 would be a bit of a gas hog

The 305 will only be a gas hog if you use the extra power. Same speed, same boat will not make a big difference in fuel consumption. It is when you use the right hand that the fuel consumption changes a lot.

My only other choice is a complete rebuild of the 470 I have went back and forth on that a dozen times. I just don't want to have 1700 to 2000 in a complete rebuild, and allways be waiting for the shoe to drop. I have read some threads on here about guys who rebuilt their 470 only to wrestle with problems.

Thumpar who has power that doesn't get into it, I know if the powers there Im the idiot to check it out.

Fishrdan a modern 3.0L will have a lot more power than a rebuilt late 80's 3.0L

All I am trying to get across is that the fuel consumption will only increase if you want it too with a 305. I have learned to be easy with the right hand with my 5.7l.

"A lot more", I don't know about that, but probably 20HP.

It really depends on the specific 3.0L or 140HP engine, and how that engine was built. A modern Vortec 3.0L would certainly have more power than the 3.0L engines that used the 2.5L head...

I've heard that the vintage of 140HP engine I have is supposed to put around 115HP to the prop.... Without looking at specs, I'm guessing the 80's engines put out around the same.

I had no idea it would be that much, well ill just have to drop back and punt, but dang spring is closing in I have a lot to do before first of april, and taking the 3.0 off the tables makes it that much harder

Re: 1988 3.0 blown head gasket

NADA shows that the 120HP (Mercruiser/OMC, dunno?) was available in the Nordic 22, so the 140HP/3.0 would most likely work. I doubt it's going to be a rocket ship though, probably have to run a low pitch prop to get performance out of the boat.

I've seen some of the guys rebuilding big Starcraft's (20-22') here that had 120-140HP I/O engines, so it's not out of question.

Though, that little of HP in that size of boat wouldn't be my cup of tea... I've run up at altitude where HP drops off and not having enough power sux big time. Or, I've had the boat loaded down heavy and it was a pig out of the hole, that sux big time too.

Does anyone know by chance, does a late 80's 470 and a late 80's 305 have the same outdrive ratio from what I understand it does just wondering if anyone knew for sure.

so for clarification : you do mainly look for the donor boats to use the engines/drives of them as a repower for your current boat ?

Ya fishrdan Im sure if I have a 3.0 and its pushing like a pig,and turning high rpms to get moving Im going to be giving a lot of that fuel economy back that I was wishing for.

yes aerobat the donor will be just to steal the motor from or motor and outdrive if need be, for my crestliner
