I have had my boat(1988 Sylvan 18'8" bow rider) apart for quite a while doing some repairs when I got the time. I have finally gotten it back together but I noticed that after running out of the water with muffs on there is soot on the transom and propellor. I originally had an over heat problem and numerous other small problems, but not this soot problem. This is a list of what i have done. New sea water pickup tube(through transom), starter, fuel pump, oil pressure sending unit, alternator, manifold, riser, all hoses, timing gear cover, thermostat, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, exhaust flappers, and all related gaskets. I have also had the carb rebuilt at a marine service center. I pulled the plugs and they are pretty black and sooty as well. Does some one have any ideas why this could be happening? Running rich maybe? Talk about a let down after all this work. I sure want to get this boat on the water. Please Help!!!

While replacing parts that are bad is a good thing, the new parts also have to be adjusted to work together. I have no idea what engine or drive you have, could be a 4 cylinder Volvo or a V8 Mercruiser, but the timing has to be set and the advance timing has to be checked. A compression test should be done to eliminate and ring or valve problems. The choke should be checked to make sure it is opening properly. The carb needs to be adjusted. <br />Like I said, lots of things to check and adjust to get everything working together.

I had the same trouble, check the specs on your engine. If you don't have a manual for your engine Get one. My carburetor was rebuilt twice.<br />It ran real sooty. My air/fuel screw was only out two turns. It needed to be out 9.5 turns! Once it was set right the soot and burning of the eyes cleared right up!<br />GOOD LUCK with your hurricane party

"soot on the transom and propellor"<br /><br />Forplay,<br />Unless your burning coal, it's running rich, (too much gasoline).<br />Carolyn

Hey Bondo. You have given me good info in the past. What's the deal? Adjust the carb and be done with it? Timing? All of the above? More?

It's No Doubt a Fuel Delivery Issue.......<br /><br />I'm Guessing that MayBe your Carb castings are eroded or the idle circuit has Serious Problems.........<br /><br />See My Post Above...................
