Hi everyone!

I have a new to me 1988 4HP Johnson Model # J4RDHCCS. I am going to be using it on a small 12' fishing boat.
It has been sitting since 2009 but started up on the 6th pull. It runs great in neutral but in forward and reverse starts to bog down when I try to open it up. I also notice too, that once it gets warm it bogs down even in the mid range. Could this be a carb issue? Should I start there? I'm new to outboards so any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Try pumping fuel bulb ... if that helps suspect air leaks into fuel line or defective pump

Try choking . I that helps suspect carb cleaning needed

Try new plugs ( Champion QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030")

Clean carb esp high speed nozzle and orifice.

Flush out tank and refill with fresh (50:1) fuel

check fuel line, esp connector, for (air) leaks

Check /clean fuel filter

Great, thanks for the tips. I've ordered a Carb repair kit, fuel pump repair kit, and two new spark plugs. I'll report back and see if that fixed it!
