1988 60HP Throttle

My 60HP Johnson was running fine, but the throttle stayed at idle while in reverse. I noticed the cam-follower on the throttle linkage was excessive (about .25?) so adjusted it to about .005 and moved the cam plate slightly to ensure it intersected the follower. Reverse engine speed was corrected, but now the fast idle lever no longer increases RPM. I fiddled with everything, including disassembling the remote control and doing a full linkage adjustment as per the manual. Try as I might, I still can?t get the fast idle lever to increase RPM (there is no resistance when I lift it). I suspect I don?t have all the slack out of the throttle cable but can?t seem to get it.

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

you may have a throttle cable going bad.

Re: 1988 60HP Throttle

The problem turned out to be a loose nut on the fast idle lever. Lubricating the remote and unknowingly improving the ground not only made the throttle work much better, but solved a slow running trim motor.
