1988 80 hp merc bogging down

I have 1988 80 hp 3 cyl. Merc. When it gets to about 3500 rpm's it will start to bog down and surge from low rpm's to high rpm's. I have gone through and replaced the fuel tank, the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump (including all fittings and primer bulb), rebuilt the fuel pump and rebuilt the carbs. It still runs exactly the same. Now I started checking some eletrical system. The stator according to my manual should test 3.6 - 4.2 and the actual reading is 3.36, the book says if it reads anything other than stated it should be replaced. Does anyone think this could be the problem? Any advice is helpful at this point.

Could be. Your stator has high speed and low speed coils. The high speed coils kick in around 1800 RPMs. An ohm test is a unreliable way of testing the stator. To properly test the stator you need a DVA meter (peak voltage reading).<br /><br />-andy

I had a problem with my 1984 150 bogging down. I read a post somewhere about disconnecting the stator to rectifier wires and tried that. The ohm readings on my stator were only slightly out-of-line too, so I disconnected the wires and taped them. The motor ran great, so I replaced the stator and it continued to run great. I replaced the switchboxes and am getting a new stator too. Just make sure your battery is well charged since disconnecting the wires cuts off the charging.

Oops...should have said I was getting a new rectifier, since I already replaced the stator.
