1988 85hp force wont start

i did the compression test it has 120psi in each cyl it has spark it starts for a sec and then it does the back fire and shuts off what could be the reason ?

If the backfire is a loud, violent event you have spark plug wires mixed. If it is merely a cough you have fuel/carb problems.

Check the fuel pump diaphram.Clean the carbs,make sure the jets are clean and not clogged and the reeds are ok..
Ethanol is not our friend.It's making the older hoses soft/mushy and they collapse.Change all the hoses and the squeezie.
At the top of this thread is a post by FrankA it's called a linc and sinc.Do that and come back with your results.J

thanks to everyone with the help it was the rpm regulator was missing there i put a new screw and now the motor starts good but the cooling system doesnt seen to be working

I seem to be having the same problems. It started this morning, ran great. Then the lights were left on somehow.. Now 6 hours later it will not start. We thought it was the battery so we put a brand new one in. It cranks but wont turn over. Someone help please!!!
