There is one vent plug and one drain/fill plug. Take anything else out you are in deeeeep trouble.

TIP: Get a Service Manual; anyone who works on an outboard without one has a fool for a mechanic.

i have the service manual the vent and fill are side by side, then lower is a slot blade screw which i think is linkage for prop, then very bottom almost underneath is a hex screw, where does the oil drain, the manual shows the hex screw says hex screw on the very bottom underneath. so i am lost ???

the flat blade screw at the bottom on the side of the lower unit is the drain... and you fill the unit from the fill plug till it comes out of the vent... then your done.. the hex nut is for the linkage

It should be the one on the very bottom. maybe someone replaced the old plug. the side one is the linkage.

The hex on the very bottom is the drain. Mine was so tight, I said, ok! here goes and gave the allen wrench everything I had while tapping on it with a hammer. It gave. Was prepared to drill and tap. Cleaned threads, inside and out,(tap and die set) used antiseize when reinstalling.

Re: 1988 85hp

Kjay,
I have the same motor. Its definitly the hex all the way at the bottom. The one you have labeled as the drain in your photo is the linkage (DO NOT TOUCH THIS - VERY BAD!!) and the one you have labeled linkage is the drain. They are a pain to get out. In fact, I haven't removed mine yet after breaking off an easy out after trying all kinds of different methods of removing it. Mine is completely stripped so I tried the easy out and it didn't work so now I have an even bigger problem - drilling or getting the easy out removed first then drilling and retapping the existing drain hole. Waiting for the season to be through before I venture into that one. Wondering though if its possible to leave that one and drill and tap a new drain hole near the original - Guess I'll start a new post when I get into it. Good luck - use penetrating oil, and heat and careful not to strip it.

Re: 1988 85hp

i changed the picture so it reflect the correct hole labels. this thread got very confusing fast, lol here is the correct labels and i am taking the allen key one out at the very bottom underneath and not touching the flat head screw on the side. glad i didnt touch that i would have been very upset

If it just won't come out, you can also drain it by going in behind the prop. Don't remember exactly but I think once you remove a mounting bolt the oil will drain. Open vent of course.

+1, search frank acampora's posts. If I recall correctly he discussed it somewhere.

Re: 1988 85hp

I might as well jump into this thread seeing how I have the same lower unit.

I think some of the confusion is that we have a DIFFERENT lower unit then upper unit, quite often people slapped 89' Mercury lower units on there.

Either way that picture is correct, the big screw closest to the facing front is the fill the other one is the vent :)

I have a question about the drain on mine though, I'm leaking gear lube out of it! Is there a screw or something that's suppose to be in there or a gasket?!? ack
