Can I use lower unit from a v4 motor if the shaft length is the same(20). Does the hp matter.

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />Has to have the same splines. Different horsepowers use different gear ratios, but you can compensate with a different prop. There is alsthe bolt pattern, they have to match. There was a change between 1977 and earlier and 1978 and later. Probably other changes along the way.

They changed driveshaft configuration in about 1992. The later driveshafts do not have the groove for an oring. The crankshafts were also changed to have an oring in them to seal the splines.<br /><br />You may need to buy a driveshaft if you find a later model gearcase.

I have a 1988 88 spl johnson, would a 1990 johnson 90 lower unit be thee same?
