1988 bayliner 85 hp force motor

i just recently bought a 1988 bayliner with a 85 hp force motor. i took it out last wkend and once it started it ran fine for most ot the time on the water. after a while of drivin around and startin and stoppin when i was cruisin and would throttle back to neutral it would die. not sure if it was just cause it hasnt been run in almost 2 yrs, the guy i bought it from had it goin and pressure tested. thinkin maybe there is/was air or water in the line because of where the primer bulb was sittin. thinkin of puttin in some sea foam first and maybe a new primer bulb and goin from there? any other suggestions?

whats your RPM at idle? I had to adjust my throttle screw out a little

First, you need to make sure your idle rpm is set properly at 1000~1100 RPM in neutral and around 750~800 RPM in gear. You might want to de-carbon the engine also as it hasn't been run in a couple of years.

Several years ago I went out in my 1984 Bayliner with 85 H.P. Chrysler Force engine and everything was great for about an hour. Then the o-ring on the fuel line connector to the gas tank went bad. At slow speeds the boat seemed to run fine. Also the engine had no trouble starting. However, when I tried to accelerate, I was apparently sucking a lot of air into the line because the engine would slow down and actup, sometimes quitting entirely, but sometimes just stumbling. Replaced the o-ring and everything was fine.

Had a primer bulb go bad on me. Wouldn't allow enough fuel into the line and when the motor wasn't running, any fuel there was in the line would siphon back into the tank. Bulb was squishy to the feel when I pumped it. Usually, you can feel it pumping fuel into the line and when the line is full - the bulb becomes firm to the touch. I replaced the old bulb and now keep a spare onboard - cheap insurance.


the guy i bought it from had it goin and pressure tested.
Went out several weeks ago and everything was fine at the beginning of our outing. Left a no wake zone and hit full-throttle and got about 2/3 power. I had blown a head gasket and lost most pressure in the middle cyclinder. At idle, the boat seem to run okay, but giving it any gas at all and I had no OOMPH to go. Eventually, the boat became difficult to start or keep running at idle speeds.

New head gasket and everything is fine now. READ about that issue HERE

So as to not worry you... the 3 items I mentioned above and a bad coil are the only problems I have with my boat in 28 years. Don't want you to think these engines aren't reliable if cared for properly. 2 of my problems were not really engine problems and 2 were (coil and head gasket).

had same problem adjusted idel up a bit good after that
