Hi guys, I just bought a small boston whaler with a 1988 evinrude 70 vro. I have very big problems to start the motor when it is cold. I have seen in another message that my motor is probably equipped qith a "primer" instead of a choke(http://www.outboardrepairs.com/topics/010353.html). Can anyone tell me more about it ? I also have another question : I have seen on the left side of the motor a small cylinder (about 5 cm long) connected to the carburators with a small red lever on it. Can anyone tell me what the use of this is ? Thanks in advance for your help and Regards from Brittany in France ! Maxius.

The red lever is for MANUAL-by rope starting. the red lever should be folded back parallel to the body of the solonoid for normal use.

Use this starting procedure.

1. Pump up the primer bulb.

2. Turn the key to the ON (not start) position.

3. Push the key in and hold it for an eight count.

4. Release the key and attempt to start the engine without pushing in on the key.

5. Once started, you may have to "bump" the key in to keep it running.

DJ, I've had my '89 Johnson 70 since it was new and always struggled a bit on cold startups. I made a copy of your procedure and just used it to start her up on the muffs. After sitting for two months she came to life easier than she ever has before! One or two short bumps and she purred away. I had no idea the primer did anything unless the motor was actually running. Thanks a million.
