To start this off here is a link to the original thread I had started back in Oct.
http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/late-80s-70hp-evinrude-driveshaft-584118.html

Now to the update. Got tired of looking at this thing sitting in the garage and the weather was nice so took some time today to see what I could do to get it apart. As the exhaust housing was already cracked very badly I took an angle grinder to it and cut out the sides around the water pump and was then able to get enough seperation between the pump housing and lower unit to get a sawsall in there to the drive shaft. Cut the shaft and was then able to remove the lower unit and the remaining part of the exhaust housing leaving the shaft well exposed.

The shaft as it was would not move so I took a 3lb hammer and tried to beat it back down which then loosened the shaft and it would wiggle around and slide up about 3/16" and get stuck again. With a 5lb hammer and a pipe wrench I was finally able to beat it out.

Looking at the splined end it appears the the shaft must have twisted inside the crankshaft. There are burrs on all 4 of the splines about half way down the spline were it looks like it turned.

Does anyone know or have pictures of what the splines should look like on this shaft? They do not look very deep until it gets just above where the oring will go. Also the spline is deeper on right side of the spline than it is on the left side when looking down the shaft from the end.

I have some picture of this but they are not very clear and don't show much detail.

Next step from here I think will be to reinstall the exhaust and transom clamp mounts and get it on a stand to try and get some compression testing done. If in poor condition I'll then start breaking it down for parts.

Well if anyone happens to pull their 70hp lower for a pump change how about shooting me a couple pictures of the end of their driveshaft. Please!

Here you go. The splines on this one are slightly worn.

Thanks Chinewalker, That is of great help!

Here are a couple of what I have. Looks like this one is worn even more.

Do you know what the diameter of this is supposed to be across the splines? This one I have is .715" and the depth of this spline is only about .030"

Wow! I's say so! Not sure on the diameter offhand, but it is supposed to be the same depth all the way down to the bottom of the splined area. Yours, clearly, are not. Before investing in a new driveshaft, I'd check the crankshaft for wear, as I would suspect that the crank splines are similarly worn...

Thanks, haven't had a chance to check the crank because it is still full of penetrating oil from trying to get it out. I will do that in a little bit though as I'm waiting on a phone call.

Should I assume though that the crackshaft is harder than the driveshaft so that most wear would be on the driveshaft? Also just trying to get my head around how this could have gotten so worn. In the timeframe of outboard life this 1988 really isn't that old.

Yes, the crank will be harder material, hardened steel vs. stainless. It may still be serviceable - won't know until you can clean the crud out and take a look. I've seen stripped driveshafts that had still usable cranks, as well as ones where everything was toast.

All it takes is one waterpump job where the o-ring is left out and the shaft isn't greased up for the crank splines to start rusting. Once they wear a little bit, the extra slop involved accelerates the wear until things jam up, eventually to the point where they can just spin out.

Again thanks! No need to go any farther as it is the splines inside the crank are wiped out also. So what I have left looks like a bunch of spare parts. I'm not going to try and rebuild this as I'm sure I could find another locally for less than the cost of a new crankshaft, but I do know just a new driveshaft is $756.00 from BRP.

Had to look. CRANKSHAFT is not available at this time.

Oh Well, parts are parts.
