My '88 force 125 starts right up, and runs like a champ...when I can get it into gear without dying. Any ideas?

Fouled plugs? Howz it run without the cowling off? You might have poor exhaust thru the ports due to a miss aligned or torn boot and the cowling vents aren't enough, the engine is starving for air under load...it happened to me and I addressed this issue and performance was much improved, dont forget to clean those plugz too..

What's the rpm in gear and motor warm?
Needs to be 750-800 in gear.About 1100-1200 in neutral.
Setthe idle in the water in gear.
Do a compression/spark test.J
