hello..
picked up my first boat...basic bayliner with a force 125..guy winterized it and said it ran,two yrs ago
trying to get it started and it would run for a bit then die, then the bottom carb started to flood(gas coming out)
tried to clean the carbs ,but no dice.. so i went ahead and ordered two rebuilt ones and a fuel pump diaphragm, etc
i then(which i should have done first) checked the compression(cold engine) top 2 were 110 and third was 90(didnt check the forth yet) this was done with an auto zone rental tester,so it might be off..
if the carbs work is that enough compression for the engine to work

The compression with a good tester is 150#
But, the results from your tester might be different??

Remove all the plugs, pull the kill switch, don't use the key to turn it over.
Jump it at the solenoid.
Let it turn over until the gauge stops going up.

Again your results might not be the same as mine.
But if all 4 are within 5-10# of each other it should be OK.

Do the test again and post the results.

hello.
could the low readings have come from the way i did the test?( all plugs in except the one i was testing, and turned the key to start).. and if the compression stays the same lets say 110 to 90 , are those readings enough for the motor to operate

thanks

The way it was done was wrong.
You need to remove all the plugs and the kill switch.
You can use the key then but if you use a jumper at the solenoid, it's easier than getting to the key.

The comp if all 4 are the same or close?? it's probably the gauge and it should run.
BUT!! get another gauge and make sure.
No reason to spend $$ on a dead motor.
