1988 force 50 hp, motor jumps when put in reverse

The motor flies out of the water when put in reverse. NO trim/tilt motor. some other way to lock motor manully? I have no clue what to do??????

There is a locking mechanism on your motor.
It's broken,missing.Could be,the reverse lock link or the spring or the ??
Tilt the motor all the way up and take a few pics of the underside.
Post them and we'll try to give you an idea what parts you need.
This can be fixed with just hand tools and the motor doesn't have to be taken off.

i have an 89 force 50. it has a locking mechinasm right under the top cover located on the front. it flips from side to side locking the motor down on the drive pin that goes in to trim motor settings. if i have it on relase it does the flip up thing too. you prob have it in release or its broke.

here is a pic of mine. should be the same. front of motor below the top cover. kind of hidden. when you are in the boat looking at front of motor right is locked and left is release if the sticker is faded or gone.

Hello. I'm new to this forum and have a 50 hp Force outboard that has what sounds like the same problem as what was discussed here; the engine runs fine in forward, but when I put it in reverse, it pops out of the water. There is a bracket that almost seems spring loaded behind the leg of the motor that I have manually latched on the "bar" on the leg, but when it finally hits reverse, I guess it's too much power and that bracket doesn't hold anymore and the engine pops up. I'm wondering if I have the lever that you spoke about and maybe that will solve the issue. Is it possible to post those pictures again? They would be an emormous help.
