Re: 1988 Johnson Seahorse 4hp advice please

Re the oil volume. The gearboxes with reverse gear need 325cm? those without reverse gear I'd guess quite a bit less.

Regarding the temperature you should be able to touch any part of the cylinder block or head, except around the spark plugs and the exhaust manifold cover plate, and maintain contact for a count of three. (Depends of course how sensitive your fingers are)

If you can't do that or especially if splash of water sizzles and boils it is getting too hot. You may well be looking at taking off the clyinder head and clearing the water passages. Maybe the watertube is blocked . You may have to take the whole power head off the leg... you will if you need to get the watertube out.

The pictures here http://www.lakelandimages.co.uk/Forum pics/info_engine/Evinrude4hp/
should look pretty familiar .
The trouble with this engine ( owned by someone in the Lake District) was that at sometime earlier the powerhead had been sealed to the leg with silicone sealant which had blocked the water channel at the top of the watertube!

Re: 1988 Johnson Seahorse 4hp advice please

hi all,

ive just bought a 1988 4hp johnson like the one descrbed in these threads, model number is BJ4BRCCS. there was no manual that came with it and im new to outboard engines i started it up the other day with the left hand dial pulled and turned down (take it this is the choke) , it starts ok but then passes out when i put her in gear. Due to my lack of knowledge on these im not sure what to do next? Really not sure about the dial? the dial only moves 90 degrees from left to down... any walkthroughs on start up and how long i should leave it ticking over before i engage the gear?

any help would be much appreciated

cheers, sam.
