OK so I just changed my lower unit and thought that was the reason I was only going 32 mph instead of 45mph. Well I was wrong.... it is an ignition problem!! Who would of guessed huh?? I took a spark tester and put it on cyl #1 and I was getting intermittent spark at idle, then no spark when reving the engine over certain rpm, then it would come back sometimes at even higher rpm. So I figured thats my problem. Then put the tester on cyl#3 and noticed NO SPARK at all. Cyl 2 an 4 have perfect spark. SO I played the coil swap game and got cyl 3 to fire perfectly but cyl 1 is still intermittent. Even when I put a good coil on cyl 1 the spark is intermittent or gone. So I've come to the conclusion that NOTHING makes sense on this stupid motor. But the problem is definitley on one bank (cyl 1 and 3) and cyl 2 and 4 seem fine. I have changed stator, timer base, ppack, coils, plugs, wires and put numerous hours of hard labor into this motor (almost a year). It has given me nothing but trouble and heartache. My question is this. IS there a simple way to determine if the powerpack is bad?? Because it seems to me like if its intermittent spark only on one side it is either a bad timer base or ppack. But Im tired of throwing parts. Do i need to ask my wife for a DVA or peak reading meter for my birthday??

wow you really like doing things the hard/expensive way. The motor actually makes perfect sense if you take the time to learn how it works. It is so easy a cave man can do it. you need to get a DVA adapter and a multi meter so you can test your stator/power pack/rectifier/regulator/timer base. you can go to CDI electronics site for troubleshooting guide in the support section. it will tell you exactly what to test and how. report back if you have any questions. USA tools has a DVA adapter for $25..google it. you should have got the DVA adapter first...but we can not go back in time..only forward.
My guess will be you need to replace the rectifier/regulator. I only guess that because it seems to be the only part you have not replaced...did your Tach go bad just before this problem cropped up???
