Little story, Been looking for a boat now for months. Decided I could buy a project cheap enough that needed some work and when I was done I would have a solid boat to fish out of and do what ever we wanted to in it.

Wanted a big 4 cyclinder or a 4.3L Merc I/O. I was surfing a website similar to Craigslist and someone just posted a 88, 2000sr Maxum for $2,000. thier story was they did not drain the engine to winterize it because they were told the petcocks would be plugged up form rust inside the engine.

So the the wife and I made the trip to look at it.

The good:
-plenty of room for us
-transom is solid
-nice cover
-runners are solid
-nice cover to keep it dry
-floor solid
-out drive has no water in the oil, oil looked used rather than fresh

The bad:
-cracked block
-cracked exhaust manifolds
-small crack in hull

I had already priced a new long block from Rapido, and Exhaust manifolds. So I knew what I was going to have to pay out there to have a good engine in the boat.

After I found the small 4" long crack I talked to my dad who has been on boats for years and talked about the repair it would need.

So armed with everything I low balled thier price. Offered $500 and drove it away for $750, hit the tire shop for 2 new tires since we had a good drive home with it in the middle of no place Wyoming.

Boat and Trailer $750
New tires $180
Engine ordered, roller 350 long block $1750 shipped
Manifolds $345 shipped
Complete Bellow kit and Complete impeller kit $230
Tax and Title $50
total $3305

I decided I could buy a cheap boat to change a few things inside to what I want rather than paying alot of a boat up front and not want to mess the interior up.

plans, put a fishing deck up front with a electric trolling motor. Deck will have doors built in to utilize the storage up front where the seats were.

Eventually remove the back to back seats and install 2 captain type chairs to allow more room inside for fishing.

possibly add in a live well.

When I am done alot of the equipment will be new so I can look forward to many, many trouble free years with proper maintance.

a few pictures from my facebook page.

I have searched and read alot on iboats. I do have some questions on the best way to put the deck on the open bow area. The seats remove easily and I will not need them so they will probably go into the trash.

Unless some one steers me differently I am planning on puttin 3/4 marine grade plywood on the front for the deck. It would be strong enough to hold 2-3 umm round fisherman. :)

I really would not like to glass the ply wood in, just in case I want to sell it the deck can come out easily. I do plan on covering it with some marine carpet. What would be the best way to seal the plywood up so the water does not damage it?

First off, NICE looking boat. What did you do to test that the stringers and Transom were GOOD! On a 22 year old boat this is quite unusual!!!

As for your plan on the forward deck you could use PT plywood, and then coat with several coats of this stuff, then cover with carpet. It will last for years.

I used a small hammer to listen for dull or hallow sounds as well and pushing my heavy feet all over the interior of the floor.

Well, I would STRONGLY suggest you do some further probing. If you have a ski locker and around the engine compartment take a look with a flashlight and see what you can see below deck. Also take a drill and drill some exploratory holes about 3/4 inch deep into the motor mounts and any wood stringers you can get to. You're looking for Light Tan DRY shavings. If you get Dark Brown Wet shavings you have a problem. Do the same thing on the transom down low on the out drive. The Thumping and Stomping method is NOT very reliable when it comes to Checking out What is really going on with vintage boats.

Yeah, nice boat. I have the same one, but yours was in better shape. Mine only has the 3.0 also. It works well enough for me but V8 would be nice. 3/4 will be fine. I'd put resin on it personally but either way. Not real fond of PT plywood since it tends to warp all over the place. Plus it is usually doesn't seem to have the same stiffness. For the price difference, you could get 3/4 ext. and a quart of poly resin and a bit of mat. It really doesn't take long.

Anyways, here's mine

I will check it out more when the weather warms up some more. IT will also be alot easier to check it with the engine out.

Wow that boat looks much nicer than I though it would considering what you paid. Sounds like a cool project. Check out this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=292511 as he did a bang up job on a similar bow deck idea.

I looked at his thread a bit, I really like the deck, and thats pretty much what I had planned for mine. Thanks for the link!
