I connected the battery the tilt motor did nothing no sound, starter same, + terminal became very hot in 1 min or so. Does the motor need to be down to engage the starter.

You tried to crank the motor and the positive battery lead got hot and the motor didn't turn over?

I would pull all the plugs, disconnect the coil from the distributor (for safety) and spray some sea foam down into the cylinders and see if it will crank then.

Maybe beforehand see if you can somehow turn the crankshaft manually.

whatever you do, get some oil into those dry cylinders before doing anything.

Thank you for your reply. The starter has not made a sound or tried to move. Yes I can with effort turn the fly wheel. I will get some sea foam at lunch while buying 20 amp fuses to replace the one which tested good before I somehow broke it in half.

I installed sea foam in the cilinders and truned buy hand.

I tried the starter again in a quitter environment the solenoid clicked however the voltage at the solenoid is 12 on bat side and 7v on starter side also the hot side of the ignition switch is 12 and the solenoid wire is also 7v when turned to start The bat and starter heated up after 7 tests in the Clymer I received today the tests mentioned 12v and no v not 7v.

While opening the starter plenty of water pored out the bottom cap a solid mas of black stuff with brushes glued in place the crunchy sound is many bits of magnet most likely shattered buy someone banging on the starter so I ordered a new one, and my camera wont quit saying S.D. card error.

Now for the soundless tilt motor at least it would be much more difficult for someone to have beaten this one to death. Does anyone know if it is safe to connect it directly to a battery for a functional test.

It started and runs but back fires through exhaust every 10-30 seconds after a few minutes a backfire kills it, tested twice. The plug wires seem to be correct I tried a pic but it says invalid file.
