You can usually set the timing on a non running engine by just cranking and watching the strobes from the timing light.

Thanks Bruce! What should I time this thing at? So, i ordered the complete impeller kit with the housing. The over heating was from no water getting to the engine.

Background on this boat...or chain of events. I just wanted to have the boat running I was sick of waiting and on my days off I wanted to be on the water and not wrenching on this boat. So, my buddy refers my to a boat mechanic that he has used, great. I call the guy and tell him i want the fluids changed and the filters give it a tune up adjust the carb and fix a electrical problem, the guy says sure 400 bucks.

he calls me back and said my motor is shot but he did change the filters and the fluids and fix the electrical problem. He goes on to tell me that the over heating issue is indicative of a head gasket problem, and i should just sell the boat.
Next day the guy calls me and asks how much I want for the boat!! i fixed the issues in 45 min and have never worked on a boat motor before!

My thought is that he was just trying to scam me out of my boat!

This is why we have so much distrust for mechanics!

10? is the initial timing.

Make sure you set your dwell as well and then check your timing. Dwell should be 36?
