I recently purchased a 1988 omc 3.0 i took it out the other day and the belt that goes around the crank pulley, water pump, and alternator broke from old age i purchased a new belt and for the life of me cannot figure out how to get the belt around the engine mount, do you have to take one side of the mount loose and hope the engine does not drop or what thanks for any suggestions.

Ayuh,......

On the portside of the Mount,....
Remove the 2 bolts,+ the Spacer Block,....
Install the Belt,+ then the Spacer,+ the 2 bolts....

If your set up is like mine, where the OMC only has a single engine mount in front......you really need an above hoist to hold the motor up once you loosen the front motor up. If you take it off and hope it doesn't go anywhere you could damage the drive and any rubber connections. There are easier ways to do it without a hoist....which I don't really like to share because if it isn't done right you can like I said above ruin some things on ur drive. The engine hoist is the best and quickest way to do it.

i saw a diagram of one with the spacer that you are talking about but it does not look the same as mine the diagram was the mercruiser not the omc mine does not seem to have the spacer so do you think i could try to support the motor with a jack under it or would that be too much weight to put in the bilge.

When you do go to do it, it would be cheap insurance for the cost of another belt to put a second belt in there and just tie it back so that the next time it will be a piece of cake.

i ended up using a small car jack and jacked it up just high enough to support the weight of the motor took the bolts out of the engine mount and slipped it in worked good not really that difficult thanks guys
