I recently bought a 1988 omc 3.0 the engine had been sitting for a while and me and my friend replaced the starter and i had considered putting a automotive starter on it but after all the stories i read we put a marine one on it, my question is the fuel pump was not working and we put a plate over where the fuel pump goes on the block and installed a electric fuel pump but it was a automotive fuel pump but as with the starter stories this has me concerned if it is safe i should mention that we mounted the automotive fuel pump completely outside of the bilge it is not even close to the engine is this safe.

Re: 1988 omc 3.0 fuel pump question

the biggest problem with fuel in a boat is, that the hull is in the shape of a cup (so to speak) gas fumes get into the bottom and do not get blown out. I am a firm believer in keeping anything that has to do with fuel and spark O.E.M. (stock) the people that build them, must use them for a reason:)

what did you do with the overflow plastik tube that was connected to the fuel pump.i bet you left it hangin.thats ok in a car cause it would drip on the pavement.however in a boat it would drip in your bilge and than one day when you go to start the motor there will be a big bang.you have to get the right pump and install it right.new gasket and all.i paid 120 bucks for a new one.and so should you.get a new fuel pump or fix the old one.

Did it start with the new pump?

You might use that auto pump to drain the tank, if it is old gas, then install the correct marine pump. (after you take off the doghouse, and expel any fumes that might be there.

It did start with the new pump and i ran it all over the lake i looked at it today and my friend apparently did not use the plate i bought he installed the old fuel pump to block hole in block and ran the return back to the old pump he said maybe we should install a brass fitting in the gas tank and run the return from carb back to the fuel tank what do you guys think about doing that would it be safe thanks

And I thought this was a driveway test...
Get a new mech pump. Get the auto rig off of it!
