1988 OMC Cobra Faulty Tim Control Switch

Just lately, when I toggle my trim up or down on my throttle control it will not always contact unless I toggle back and forth a few times until it kicks in. It is intermittent. I checked the plug at the engine and it seems fine. The wiring to and from the switch is okay. I can only conclude it is the switch itself. I think I could sodder a new one in if I could find one. I cannot seem to locate one. Anyone have an idea what this switch is actually called and where I can find one that fits my control arm?

Clean the connections on the switch, harness, solenoids, trim pump motor.

Thanks. I will check those things more carefully. The toggle is soddered in so I am not sure what i can clean there. What do the solenoids look like and how do you clean them? If it still turns out be a bad toggle, Where can I get a new one for an OMC shift arm?

Re: 1988 OMC Cobra Faulty Trim Control Switch

Since last I posted, I have discovered that it only faults when I am trying to send the trim down, not up. I would assume if it missed both going up or down, it would be a fouled contact point. But now I am wondering it this would indicate a faulty solenoid or a faulty switch. Anyone have any opinions / suggestions?

I'm having the same problem on my 1993 OMC Cobra. It will go down, but not up. To get out of the lake and up the ramp, I had to reverse the wires on the trim motor. I'm thinking it is the switch. My boat mechanic told me to bypass the switch with a two way toggle switch as a test. I haven't traced the wires or cleaned the connections yet, but I will.

If I learn more, I'll let you know.

I was able to fix mine by simply cleaning all the terminals. It is amazing that even when they are nutted on firmly and have just been sitting there that they can loose connection. Anyway, my advice, before getting complicated and spending money is, get to all the connections and hit them with some sand paper and put them back on and then try it.
