Okay let me start by saying I have never in my life even seen the inside of an outboard until last week. I have rebuilt several V8 auto engine and enjoy doing it, so figured I would try this one time at least. It is to my advantage that I have a friend that owns a shop that builds high performance V8 racing engines, who wanted to get inside this engine more than I did, or as he stated "SEE HOW THEY WORK" and "BETTER TO START ON YOURS THAN MINE" as he was laughing his behind off. Needless to say I have all of the machine work if required right there and FREE OF CHARGE! that will teach him to laugh. I also have two relatives that are marine wrenchs plus 3 more friends that are so I have all of the help I could ask for. With all of that said any imput any of you may have would be great.
The engine would loose power at higher rpm 3500-5000 after the engine was warmed up. When you backed the throttle down the rpm leveled out. Let it cool down and everything was fine but the longer it ran the more erratic it would get. Anyway a friend of mine who is a marine mechanic checked the electrical out and everything checked okay with the electical. Then he noticed oil residue on the top of the engine and after a couple of checks stated he tought it was a blown crankcase seal and that it would be around $1000 to install new gaskets thru the entire engine. Since the engine was going to be broken down that far I wanted new rings installed if I was going to fix the engine, that made the price around $1500. On that old of an engine if I am going to stick 1500 in it what would it cost to overhaul like you would a car, Sorry I ask that one.
So to make this already long story shorter all of my friends/relatives have pitched in and got all of my parts priced out, some of which were in storage because they were extra from previous overhuals that do not cost me anything and I can replace all bearings, pistons, gaskets, thermostats everything except the cranks and rods for around 1500 would you all do it or look another way?
