I recently purchased a 1988 Ebbtide Fish & Ski with a Yamaha 225 Excel outboard. The boat is in excellent condition for its age And I am thourougly satisfied with it.

However, I have some quetions if anyone can assist me.

First, the speedometer ceased to work after (during my) first outing. I have had this happen with other boats before, when the sensor intake is knocked up by debris or clogged by debris.

However, I cannot seem to locate the sensor on this boat or engine. I suspect that the sensor is somewhere on the lower unit, as there is no indication of a sensor on the transom. Or is there?

Does anyone know where the speed sensor is located for this engine? Or boat model?

Second. The boat performs well and reaches plane easily and cruises like a charm. But I have noticed that the motor seems (to me) to be burning gas excessively IMO.

Last weekend, I traveled approximately 10 miles total on the water fishing, excluding brief idle period after start ups. And when I topped off the tank after my trip? I had burned 7.5 gallons. Is this a normal rate of fuel consumption for this engine? I was not traveling at full speed and was keeping it in the 40-45 mph rage while on plane and traveling.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

speed is irrelavant, speedo's should be illegal as I am interested in RPM.
however the speedo pickup is located on the leading edge of the gearcase just above the prop centerline.
that motor,at or near its operating range will burn 22 gallons an hour without a problem.inother woreds RPM above about 4400 will consume fuel like your a sheik.
takes X amount of gasoline to make X amount of power.
however if the enrichment system is defective or a fuel pump diaphram is bad it gets worse.

That model use chokes for enrichment. Be sure the flaps are wide open when the choke is not engaged. Also as rodbolt pointed out, a leaking fuel pump can cause excessive fuel consumption.

Thanks for the information. I will have the diapham checked and and the chokes and take a look at the speed indicator. 22 gallons an hour! Holy crap! I will keep the rpm's down also and see how that does.

Thanks for the help.

the speed sensor is on the lower unit in front of the bullet there is a small hole that is probably stop up with dirt or sand ,what you have to do is take a small drill and by hands turn it to see if you can clear it out the debris if not you need to use a drill motor and see if you can clear out debris but be careful if you break drill you are done and then it a dealership fix and that will be expensive

Does anybody know what yamaha recommends for fuel on these engines?

I'm running 91 oct with no problems, but have been told that it may be able to run on 87 oct just as well? Anybody have the original spec?

thx

Tom!
