I own a 50hp 1989 Force outboard. It runs fine on top end but will not idle? It idles down to far and stalls out before I can put it in gear. I have taken off the carburetor and did what I knew to clean it, which was just spray it out with carb cleaner, took off the float and cleaned under that needle, and pulled the sleeve off from the center needle and cleaned out them ports? Was wondering if anyone nows anything else it could be?

Only one question: Have you tried to adjust your idle speed to spec, or does it die when it reaches the specified idle speed?

What is the best way to do that, by adjusting the linkage? I don't want it to be idling to hi when I but it in the I will end up putting out my lower unit, it really sounds like it is loading up?

Next step would be a compression test. No need to buy a gauge if you have a good auto parts store in town (they'll let you borrow one in most, but you'll probably need to leave a deposit).
A perfect carb cannot deliver fuel to the cyls without vacuum (the inhale to the exhale called "compression".

Do you know what the compression should be in the Cylinders?

Thanks for the info? I checked them last year when I was having a problem and it seems like they were 130 and 120. Then I cleaned the Carbs and it fixed the problem. I have it at a Marina now I will try to stop in and see if I can check them. If it not the Cylinders then I would think that it would almost have to be the Carbs? Wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a new one and put it on myself, rather then paying a marina 100 a hour to work on it? Wonder if you have any idea on what I would pay or a carb?

I forget spec on it (around 145psi I think), but anything over 90psi is useable, provided all cyls are within 5-10psi of each other. I think your compression is ok, if the test comes-up close to what you had last year.

Re: 1989 50HP carborator problem

I wouldn't go for a new carb because of the price and availability of them.
Most carbs can be repaired, the rebuild kits sell for 20-30bucks each, and are relatively simple, given the straight-forward directions in the manuals. And once you've done one, it's easier next time. Don't discount the fuel pump. Also a cheap/easy (kit is about 20bucks too) fix. Both these tasks can be done in a few hours with a decent complement of tools, the kits, and the manual.

You may want to get the wrench guy to do the adjust/re-synch tho, as they can be tricky to dial-in without a vacuum gauge.

Re: 1989 50HP carborator problem

Part 19 and part 2 are the main areas of concern for idle. With #2 removed there are three tiny holes that need to be cleaned out. You might be able to access them from through part 28 with a wire and blow out with carb cleaner and compressed air. Idle mixture screw should be removed #19 and blast carb cleaner in that hole with the attachable straw that comes with the cleaner. If you remove welsh plug number 2 a new one is part number 19-F01628. While it is apart I would get a new seat and needle valve F10265. This motor has only one carb so link and sync wont be necessary.
